Milliways, 2013
David's room is still rather plainly appointed, but not unlike his room at the Warehouse. If anything, the largest difference is that he has a small table.
He was never in the habit of eating in his room before, but here it's all he has, if he wants his Friday evenings to go uninterrupted.
When Helena comes upstairs, she'll find the table already set for dinner. The Sabbath candles aren't lit yet, naturally, but the menorah's first three are.

David still doesn't get it. But then, Mr. Knox didn't either, so he doesn't feel that bad.
Before he gets a chance to sit down, the door nudges open. "Ah, that'll be dinner." He takes the tray from the rat at the door and sets it on the table.

He checks over the spread - wine and challah, as is customary; latkes, since at least in Milliways it's that time of year; beef, green beans, and some doughnuts for dessert - and smiles. "Just a moment."
(There's no woman of the house, of course, but by now he's used to seeing to the candles and the blessing himself.)

She stands quietly, hands behind her back, closing her eyes at his blessing. Once he is done, she smiles at him and sits down.
"It has been a while since I joined you."

"But given how your week began, I thought you could use it."

"I do thank you, darling. Remembering the past without losing my mind is probably a good exercise."

There's nothing wrong with remembering those lost, but this isn't an evening for mourning.

Helena grins at him, and almost on instinct, starts serving dinner. She is a Victorian lady, even though everyone (including her) forget that sometimes.
